Trying to fix issues with the furnace but making it worse

My dad has always been a bit of a handyman, but he recently got in over his head.

Ever since I was a kid, I come to my dad when I have any kind of issues around the house or with the car.

He’s done everything from fix my dishwasher to change my tires. It’s always been smooth and easy for me, which I’ve appreciated. I know nothing about that kind of thing, so it was nice that he took care of it for me. However, he took on a project a little too big for him recently. My furnace stopped working on me, so I did what I always do when I have a problem, I called my dad. I told him that I would be more than happy to call up an HVAC technician, but he insisted on coming over and taking a look at the furnace. He spent hours taking apart the furnace, putting it back together, and trying to figure out what the problem was. Finally, he called it quits and came up from the basement looking defeated. When I called the local heating and cooling company, they said it was a bad idea to try to fix it on our own. The HVAC technician scolded me for it, but I didn’t have the heart to tell my dad that he made the damages much worse! It ended up taking almost four hours for the HVAC technician to get the furnace up and running again. Not to mention, it cost me an arm and a leg! I guess that there is a line that needs to be drawn on handy work and professional work, and I found that out the hard way. Next time, I will definitely be sure to call a certified HVAC professional when it comes to matters involving my heating and cooling.
